Trent University | Peterborough, ON
Concept
This is the final gathering in our Program’s 2018-2019 series. As requested by previous workshop participants, this two-day training focuses on technical components of environmental assessments and understanding archeology’s role in asserting rights and capacity building. This workshop has three components:
Module 2: Environmental Assessment – Preparing for Technical Meetings
Instructor: Gary Pritchard
- Review Environmental Site Assessments and Audits
- Define what constitutes good baseline data, when to conduct Environmental Baseline Studies, what their regulatory restrictions are
- Take a field walk to identify common Pathways of Effects and mitigation procedures
Module 3: Archeology & the Duty to Consult
Instructor: Julie Kapyrka
- This half day session will highlight critical issues concerning the duty to consult with regard to Aboriginal rights and archaeology
- Is cultural heritage an Aboriginal right? Why is archaeology important within a rights framework? What is an archaeological protocol? How can archaeology strengthen statements of claim?
- Learn how archeology can be used to protect cultural heritage and build capacity within First Nations
Module 4: Navigating the Crown
Instructors: Matt McPherson, Doran Ritchie
- Explore cases with failed consultation to find ways First Nations hold proponents or the crown accountable
- Learn how to use your lawyer more effectively to hold proponents or the Crown accountable
- Matt and Doran’s business partnership offers both legal and First Nation perspectives to this problem-solving
Our Modules provide space for First Nation consultation practitioners to continue building relationships formed at the Foundations Course in August 2017. We deliver hands-on, project-focused working sessions and opportunities to exchange resources.
